Statement: River Tywi pollution update
NRW is aware of concerns that have been raised, particularly on social media, regarding reports of pollution affecting the river Tywi.
We would like to thank members of the public who have reported their concerns. Information provided by local communities is invaluable and helps ensure that potential incidents are identified and investigated as quickly as possible.
NRW received a report of suspected pollution in the area, along with a report of one dead fish. These reports were assessed and form part of our ongoing investigations.
NRW officers attended the River Tywi on Saturday to carry out their own monitoring and assessment. They attended again on Monday 20 July to monitor the area. Investigations remain ongoing, and we will continue to assess all available evidence.
We are aware that there has been considerable speculation regarding a potential discharge from a particular site. This forms part of NRW’s ongoing investigations.
The River Tywi is one of Carmarthenshire’s most important natural assets. It supports internationally significant wildlife, local communities and recreation. Protecting the Tywi and the wider environment is a priority for the Carmarthenshire Environment Team.
We take all reports of pollution seriously. We work hard to investigate environmental offences and, where evidence supports it, we will not hesitate to take appropriate enforcement action.
